How to Reset a Honeywell Thermostat, Model by Model

To restart a Honeywell thermostat, pull it off the wall plate for 30 seconds. Factory reset steps by model, plus why the screen goes blank.

Quick answer

To restart most Honeywell Home Wi-Fi thermostats, pull the thermostat off its wall plate, wait 30 seconds and push it back on. A factory reset is a menu option that wipes every setting, and the steps change by model. If the screen is blank, no reset will help until the power is back, so check the batteries and the breaker first.

Restart, Wi-Fi reset or factory reset: which one you need

Honeywell Home thermostats have up to four kinds of reset. Start with the gentlest one. Honeywell's own advice is to try a different reset if the first one does not fix the problem.

  • Restart: cuts power for a moment. Your settings stay. Try it first on a thermostat that froze or dropped off Wi-Fi.
  • Wi-Fi reset: takes the thermostat off your network so you can connect it again. Use it after a new router or a new Wi-Fi password.
  • Schedule reset: puts the program schedule back to Honeywell's default.
  • Factory reset: erases everything, including the installer setup.

Honeywell's ElitePRO manual describes a factory reset as one that returns the thermostat to its pre-installation state. You answer the setup questions again, including your system type. Before you do it, we suggest you write down any installer settings you can find, because a wrong system type can make the heat run in the wrong mode.

How to restart a Honeywell Wi-Fi thermostat

Honeywell's Wi-Fi troubleshooting page gives the restart: remove the thermostat from the wall plate for 30 seconds, put it back, then wait 2 minutes. If it was connected before, the Wi-Fi icon should come back without a line through it.

On battery models the batteries sit in the back of the thermostat itself, so taking it off the wall does not cut its power. The closest thing to a restart there is a battery change, covered in the table below.

Find your model number first. The Pro 2000 operating manual, for example, tells you to pull the thermostat from the wall plate and turn it over to find the model number and date code. The steps below come from Honeywell Home's support pages and manuals as of October 2026. If your screen does not match, follow your own manual.

The basic and non-programmable models

The basic models keep their settings in permanent memory. The T6 Pro programmable manual and the RTH5160 quick install guide both say that if you put the batteries back within two minutes, you won't even need to set the time and day again. On the Pro 2000, only the clock and day need setting after a battery change, and the manual says to set the System switch to Off first so the heating or cooling does not stay on while the batteries are out.

On the RTH5160, holding Menu for about 5 seconds opens System Setup, where the installer settings live. That is where you fix a wrong system type, not a reset.

Wi-Fi reset by model

If the thermostat works but the app cannot reach it, try a Wi-Fi reset. Honeywell's reset guide lists these:

  • T5, T5+ and T6 Pro Smart: hold Menu, press > to Reset, then press > to WiFi and select it.
  • T9 and T10: Menu, then WiFi, then Change Network.
  • Smart Round: hold the Cloud icon, press "i" to WiFi and select it, then press "i" to Setup and select it.
  • Smart Wi-Fi 9000: Menu, then WiFi Setup.
  • FocusPRO 6000: hold the up arrow and Fan, set the left number to 39 and the right to 0, press Done.
  • VisionPRO 8000: press System, hold the blank center box, set 0900 on the left and 0 on the right, press Done.

Honeywell's Wi-Fi page adds a few rules that trip people up. Only the T9 and T10 thermostats can use a 5 GHz network, so give the others a separately named 2.4 GHz network. Avoid guest networks that need a web login, and connect straight to the router rather than through an extender while you set it up.

Why the Honeywell thermostat screen is blank

A blank screen means the thermostat has no power, or it is saving power on purpose. Check these in order.

1. Dead or weak batteries

Battery models need fresh cells, and some wired models, such as the T6 Pro programmable, keep batteries as a backup. On the RTH5160 and RTH6360 the batteries are the only power, even with a C wire connected. Honeywell's manuals call for alkaline batteries: two AA in the T6 Pro programmable, the RTH5160 and the RTH6360, two AAA in the Pro 2000. The low-battery warning shows up about two months before the batteries run out, and Honeywell suggests a fresh set once a year even without a warning.

The round Lyric is different. Honeywell's page on the Lyric blank screen says it takes an AAA lithium battery, so check your own manual before you buy.

2. The screen is asleep

Some screens go dark by design. A round Lyric without a C wire (the common wire that gives a thermostat constant power) lets its screen sleep to save energy and wakes as you walk up. A T6 Pro on batteries alone stays lit for only 8 seconds after a button press. Press a button or walk up to it before you assume it is dead.

3. A tripped breaker or furnace switch

Most Honeywell manuals we opened list this under "Display is blank": check the circuit breaker and reset it if needed, and make sure the power switch for the heating and cooling system is on.

4. The furnace door is not closed

Honeywell's manuals tell you to make sure the furnace door is closed securely, and its support page for a blank T6 Pro display names the furnace door kill switch as a check. If you just changed a filter, press the panel firmly back into place.

5. A loose or missing C wire

Honeywell's page on a screen that won't power up explains that a wired thermostat needs 20 to 30 volts supplied to the R or RC terminal and returning through C, and that the C wire must be connected at the furnace or air handler too. Honeywell's test: put batteries in a common-wired thermostat. If it powers up on batteries, check the breakers, furnace switch and door switch. If the system is fine and the thermostat only works on batteries, Honeywell says you may need a technician. Our thermostat wire color guide explains what each terminal does, but leave any rewiring to a pro.

6. A tripped condensate float switch

Some systems have a condensate float switch, a small safety switch in the drain pan or drain line. RectorSeal, which makes the Safe-T-Switch, says its switch shuts off the system when the drain clogs and connects to either the red or the yellow wire. The red wire carries the thermostat's power, so a tripped switch on that wire can leave a thermostat without batteries completely dark. If you see standing water in the pan, the drain needs clearing before anything will run.

7. The thermostat has failed

If new batteries and a working furnace still give you nothing, the thermostat may be done. For the battery-only RTH111, Honeywell's blank display answer is short: replace the batteries, and if it still does not power up, replace the thermostat.

Honeywell thermostat not working but the screen is on

Work through these before you reset anything.

  • "Heat On" or "Cool On" is flashing: compressor protection is on. Wait 5 minutes.
  • "Waiting for equipment": the X8S guide says this delay should last 5 minutes at most.
  • Wrong mode or setpoint: set Heat with the target above room temperature, or Cool with it below.
  • The setpoint will not move: the T6 Pro accepts heat settings of 40 to 90°F and cool settings of 50 to 99°F.

The delay messages come from Honeywell's X8S troubleshooting guide and the T6 Pro manual. The same X8S page warns that if a newly installed thermostat runs the heat in cool or off mode, you should shut off the system at the breaker and call support or an HVAC pro.

If the furnace runs but the air is cold, check that the fan is on Auto, then see our guide to a furnace blowing cold air. If the thermostat shows a different number from the room, read thermostat set at 72 but reads 75 before you blame the sensor.

What to do when it still does not work

If you have tried fresh batteries, the breaker, the furnace switch and door, and the right reset for your model, the fault is probably in the wiring or the equipment. That is a job for a licensed HVAC technician. A technician can also test whether the furnace runs with the thermostat taken out of the loop, the method in our guide to bypassing a thermostat. Leave that test to them. If the thermostat works but the furnace still will not start, our furnace won't turn on checklist covers the furnace side.

Honeywell Home technical support is at 1-800-633-3991, as listed on its thermostat support page as of October 2026. Have the model number and date code from the back of the thermostat ready.

Replacing a Honeywell thermostat

If the thermostat itself has failed, a like-for-like swap is the easy route. A basic programmable model such as the RTH6360D1002 runs on two AA batteries, so it suits a home without a C wire. If you want a smart model instead, we compare one with Nest in Honeywell 9000 vs Nest. Honeywell says a C wire powers its Wi-Fi thermostats, with a C-wire adapter as the stand-in, so check your wiring before you buy.

Frequently asked questions

Does a Honeywell thermostat have a reset button?

Not the thermostats we checked. Honeywell's reset guide puts every thermostat reset in the menu or a button combination, such as holding Menu on a T5 or T6 Pro Smart, or holding the up arrow and Fan on a FocusPRO 6000. The same guide lists a physical reset button only for devices such as its C1 and C2 cameras and its water leak detector, where you hold the button for 45 seconds.

Will a factory reset erase my schedule and settings?

Yes. Honeywell's ElitePRO manual says a factory reset returns the thermostat to the state it was in before installation. You set it up again, including the system type, and reconnect it to Wi-Fi and the app. If you only need to fix the network or the schedule, use the Wi-Fi reset or the schedule reset instead, which leave everything else alone.

How long should I wait after restarting a Honeywell thermostat?

Honeywell's Wi-Fi page says to wait 2 minutes after putting the thermostat back on its wall plate, then check the Wi-Fi icon. The heating or cooling can take longer to start. If Heat On or Cool On is flashing, compressor protection is on, and the T6 Pro manual says to wait 5 minutes for the system to restart safely.

What batteries does a Honeywell thermostat take?

It depends on the model, so check the manual or the battery compartment. The T6 Pro programmable, the RTH5160 and the RTH6360 take two AA alkaline batteries, and the Pro 2000 takes two AAA alkaline batteries. Honeywell's page for the round Lyric names an AAA lithium battery. Honeywell suggests a fresh set once a year even if the low-battery warning has not appeared.

Why does my Honeywell thermostat only work on batteries?

If a common-wired thermostat powers up on batteries but not without them, power from the furnace or air handler is not reaching it. Honeywell says to check the breakers, the furnace power switch and the furnace door switch. If those are fine and it still runs only on batteries, Honeywell says you may need a technician, because the fault is likely in the wiring or the equipment.
